About the Foundation
We believe that the school district has more potential to affect quality
teaching and learning than any other point in the education system. The district
sets policies, practices and direction that determine the quality of teaching and
learning. It also provides the connective tissue between schools and their
communities, and between schools and state and federal governments. As such, the
district is a key lever of systemic, sustainable change at scale.
The Stupski Foundation serves leaders of approximately 300 large public school
districts that are located in or encompass low-income communities. Schools in
these districts serve nearly 10 million students, the majority of whom are Latino,
African-American or recent immigrants whose families live on the economic margins
of society.
Though they serve the most disadvantaged and disenfranchised children,
these districts usually have the least support to enable their students to
succeed — less funding, less challenging coursework and less qualified, less
experienced teachers. The leaders of these districts face monumental challenges
but lack adequate means and resources.
Accordingly, the foundation’s initiatives are focused on the roughly
5,000 leaders in our target school districts. As an operating foundation, we:
- Assist districts in developing tools and practices to address critical
issues that stand in the way of world-class teaching and learning, while
simultaneously supporting leaders to redesign systems to promote high academic
achievement for all students.
- Provide a national network for high-performing leaders that will transform
the profession of district management and instructional practice.
- Work in partnership with others to inform public policy and create
incentives for the education marketplace to develop products and services
that help district leaders accelerate student achievement.
